Coroner areas and their regions are the MoJ's own, by its names: Wales is one region, and the regions are not the ONS's, so no figure is placed in a council or region of the hub's.",
  "Coroner areas merge from time to time: Greater Lincolnshire, Devon, Plymouth and Torbay, and Northumberland each from two areas on 1 April 2024, and Kent and Medway from four on 1 July 2025. An area that did not exist in a year shows no figure for it.",
  "A death is reported to a coroner when its cause is unknown, or it was violent or unnatural, or happened in state detention. The figures include deaths that needed neither a post-mortem nor an inquest, and are on each year's areas as the MoJ restates them."
