Accessibility
How accessible the hub is, what we know falls short and how to tell us about a problem.
Our aim
We want everyone to be able to use the hub, and we work to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. As a private company Suffrago is not bound by the public sector accessibility regulations; we follow them by choice.
What you can do
- Read every chart as a table on its dataset page, and download its figures as CSV or JSON.
- Use every page with a keyboard, starting with the "Skip to content" link.
- Use the hub on a phone without scrolling sideways; long tables scroll inside their own panel.
- Switch from the dark theme the hub opens in to the light one, or to Auto to follow your device's setting.
- Hear what each chart shows from a screen reader: every chart carries a one-sentence description of what it measures, the span it covers and its latest or largest figure.
What we know falls short
- In the dark theme, which the hub opens in, the word "Suffrago" in the hub's name has a contrast of 2.4 to 2.9:1 against the page, under the 3:1 WCAG asks of large text. The rest of the name, "UK Data Hub", is white and reads clearly.
- Chart tooltips appear on hover and focus, but the figures they show are also in the table below each chart.
How we test
Before a change goes live we run automated browser checks on every kind of page, at desktop and phone widths and in both themes. We have not yet had an independent accessibility audit.
If something on the hub is hard to use, email contact@suffrago.org with the page and what went wrong, and we will fix it or send you the information another way.
