Suffrago UK Data Hub
RankingsVerificationMethods

Independent service run by Suffrago – not an official government website. Every figure comes from an official UK publisher under its open licence and is checked against that source each time the data is refreshed.

Geography

The register of every official area code in the UK, the lookups between areas, the boundaries of the larger ones and Great Britain's postcodes, from the Office for National Statistics' Open Geography Portal. The hub uses them to say where each figure is counted; they add no figures of their own. Each is checked against its source like every dataset, and keeps its last verified edition, dated, for as long as the ONS still lists that edition as its newest.

Overdue editions

  • Councils to combined authorities: the newest edition the hub can find is May 2025, and the ONS usually issues one within 13 months. It may have been renamed: check the Open Geography Portal.
  • Wards to constituencies: the newest edition the hub can find is May 2025, and the ONS usually issues one within 13 months. It may have been renamed: check the Open Geography Portal.

Sources

Lookups give each smaller area's larger one: exact where areas nest, best fit where an area is placed by where most of its people live.

The area register

Codes as the ONS recorded them to 11 May 2026

Every official area code in the UK, live and past, with its name, Welsh name, type, parent and dates. Live codes come from the ONS's Register of Geographic Codes, their history from its Code History Database; the codes it issues ahead of a change join as future codes. Codes the ONS names none of, such as output areas, have no name.

Where the ONS’s files differ

  • E00140228 (E00): the RGC's sheets say not live and the Code History Database live; the CHD decides, as the RGC's own entity table agrees with it.
  • W21000002 (W21): the RGC's sheets say live and the Code History Database not live; the CHD decides, as the RGC's own entity table agrees with it.
  • W21000003 (W21): the RGC's sheets say live and the Code History Database not live; the CHD decides, as the RGC's own entity table agrees with it.
  • E04013473 is listed live twice in the Code History Database, and the entity table counts it twice.
  • E63019358 is listed live twice in the Code History Database, and the entity table counts it twice.
  • The Code History Database writes the entity code of 37 rows with a trailing space ("E05 "); the hub reads them without it.
  • W45001589: the Code History Database's name could not be read, so the RGC's is used.
  • W45001808: the Code History Database's name could not be read, so the RGC's is used.

Postcodes

ONS Postcode Directory (August 2026), Great Britain

Every postcode in England, Scotland and Wales, live and ended, with the areas it falls in, published one file per postcode area for the home page's search. The browser downloads the file for a postcode's area and finds the postcode itself, so the postcode never leaves the visitor's device. Northern Ireland's postcodes need a licence from Land and Property Services to be shown, so they are not here; anyone can choose a council and ward instead. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are outside the UK's statistical geography.

The search on the home page uses these files.

Country Live postcodesEnded postcodes
England1,495,007784,336
Scotland161,85569,242
Wales92,24749,936
  • 118 files at geo/postcodes/, 47.9 MB in all, the largest B.json at 252 KB compressed. Areas with under 2,000 live postcodes share a file, so no file covers fewer.
  • No location: 879 live and 7,318 ended postcodes have no grid reference in the directory, so the search cannot place them.
  • Where it sits and where it is counted: the directory places each postcode by its own point, and figures for small areas are counted by output area. For live postcodes in England and Wales, 43,207 sit in a different ward from the one their output area is counted in, 5,018 in a different constituency and 32 in a different council. The search says so for each.
  • E04: 1 codes, used by 10 postcodes, the latest ended 31 March 2025. The directory still places postcodes in them, so the search shows each with its end date.
  • E58: 203 codes, used by 119,167 postcodes, the latest ended 6 May 2026. The directory still places postcodes in them, so the search shows each with its end date.

Boundaries

Ultra generalised (500 m), clipped to the coastline

The ONS's boundaries of the larger areas, as GeoJSON in longitude and latitude (WGS84), each feature with its code, name and Welsh name. Each file is checked against the register: one shape for each of the tier's live codes at the edition's date. Ward boundaries come later: the ONS publishes no ultra-generalised edition of them.
