Notes

  • The ONS's Crime Severity Score weights each offence the police record by how the courts sentence it, from sentencing data for England and Wales, and divides the weighted offences by the area's mid-year population: a higher score means more harm for the population, not more offences. It leaves out fraud, for which there is no complete series below England and Wales. The years run from April to March.
  • The ONS does not show the City of London separately, as its resident population is small beside the people who work in or visit it; London's score includes it with the Metropolitan Police's. Each force's score includes the few offences with no known community safety partnership.
  • The chart leaves England and Wales, the nations and England's regions to the table.
