Notes

  • Accredited official statistics from the returns each coroner area makes to the Ministry of Justice for the calendar year. A death a coroner does not know to have been in state detention, or records under another type of establishment, is not counted here, so the figures can differ a little from other sources: HM Prison and Probation Service's safety in custody statistics are the official count of deaths in prison custody.
  • Deaths under a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards order were collected only from 2015 to 2 April 2017, after which the law no longer counted them as state detention; the prison custody and immigration removal centre figures include some deaths outside England and Wales.
