Notes

  • Accredited official statistics: the deaths the IOPC investigated or that were referred to it, from 1 April to 31 March, each in one of its five categories by the IOPC's own definitions. A single incident can cause more than one death; the hub shows the deaths.
  • The IOPC gives each force's figures too, but names forces without codes and places a case two forces share differently in its two files, so the hub shows England and Wales alone.
  • If this subject affects you, Samaritans are there day or night, free on 116 123.
  • The IOPC marks as revised in this edition: road traffic fatalities in 2021/22, deaths in or following police custody in 2021/22 and 2024/25, apparent suicides following police custody in 2024/25 and other deaths following police contact in 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25.
  • Other deaths following police contact, 2010/11: Change in definition in 2010/11 to include only cases subject to an independent investigation.
  • Other deaths following police contact, 2015/16: Expansion of IOPC investigative resource and capacity to carry out more independent investigations into serious and sensitive matters - this has a direct impact on the number of 'other contact deaths' that are reported.
