Notes

  • Section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and associated legislation (drugs, firearms, stolen property and offensive weapons) needs reasonable grounds for suspicion; section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 does not, where an officer of inspector rank or above has authorised it for an area. Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 was replaced by section 47A in 2011; section 342E of the Sentencing Act 2020 (serious violence reduction orders) and section 11 of the Public Order Act 2023 began in 2023/24. A blank is a year the power did not exist.
  • Figures before 2005/06 are given to the nearest hundred. Arrests are those following a search under any power, as Table SS_21 gives them, not every arrest the police make.
