Notes

  • Pupils in state-funded schools taking the phonics screening check in Year 1, and by the end of Year 2 those who took it again or for the first time, as the DfE's data set by region and local authority places them: meeting the expected standard, working towards it, absent or disapplied.
  • The DfE gives these figures for England's 153 councils with education and children's services duties (its unitary, metropolitan and London councils and its 21 counties), not for districts.
  • The DfE's methodology: “Regional eligible pupil figures are rounded to the nearest 10” The DfE's regions give every count of pupils to the nearest 10 and its shares as whole numbers.
  • By the end of Year 2 the DfE gives part of Barnsley's and Sheffield's pupils under their codes from before the 1st of April 2025 and part under their new ones, which it has not explained, so those figures are left out until it does (decision 47.3); Year 1 gives each council once. The DfE's counts of schools are left out.
